Apparently, attention deficit syndrome is associated with high vulnerability in the face of coronavirus infection. Scientists figured out why this is happening.

Researchers from the Ikan Medicine School at the New York Hospital Mount Sinai proved that SDVG seriously increases the chances of infecting coronavirus. They presented a report during the APSARD-2022 online conference-the American Professional Society for the Study of ADHD and related disorder of diseases.

Associate Professor Beth Crowna and her colleagues analyzed the incidence of various infectious diseases among children and adolescents with diagnosed ADHD and compared it with incidence in the control group. This group included mentally healthy children and adolescents of the same age and gender, living approximately in the same socio-economic conditions.

In total, researchers studied medical data regarding more than 18 and a half thousand children and adolescents with ADHD and 37 and a half thousand of their peers included in the control group. The age of the participants varied from 5 to 18 years.

The results of the analysis unequivocally demonstrated that young patients with ADHD are sick of infectious diseases much more often than their healthy peers. Such a phenomenon can be explained by the fact that the nervous and immune systems are in close interconnection and regulate each other’s work, so impaired function of one system entails functional abnormalities in another system, explained Crowe.

The authors of the study emphasize that the increased vulnerability of children and adolescents with ADHG in the face of infections may be of particular importance now, during the period of pandemia of coronavirus. For treating doctors, it must be borne in mind that their young patients can be especially susceptible to infection with coronaviral infection and the difficult course of Covid-19.

Moreover, not only because of reduced immune defense

against infections, but also because it is difficult for them due to a mental disorder to comply with safety recommendations-people with ADHD are usually not able to follow the instructions and actively resist any rules and restrictions.

In addition, the researchers noted that the so -called “long Covid” can enhance the symptoms of ADHG in patients with this disorder, as well as cause a neurological syndrome that, in its manifestations, resembling ADHD.
